Interview! Matt MacDonald of Vocal Few

Matt MacDonald (The Classic Crime vocalist) took the time to answer some questions for us about his new side project with his wife Kristie called Vocal Few and their upcoming EP titled “She’ll Be Right”.

CMZ:  Although many of our readers know Matt as the vocalist for The Classic Crime, I still want to introduce you to our readers as Vocal Few, so can you tell a little about how you two decided to make music together?

Vocal Few: I’ve (Matt) used Kristie’s voice on a few different projects and demos when I felt I needed a female voice. She can sing, there’s no question there, so it was only a matter of time before we did something together. Discovering we were pregnant sort of pushed us to finally pull the trigger on these songs.

CMZ: Tell me about your upcoming EP “She’ll Be Right”, what kind of approach did you take with it musically as compared to TCC?

Vocal Few: It’s pretty bare bones, kind of like what we did on TCC’s Seattle Sessions EP, but with no drums whatsoever. The songs were broken down to root piano and guitar strumming patterns. It’s vocally focused, so harmonies and melodies were key in bringing the songs to life. We couldnt hide behind a wall of guitars like on a TCC album, which is a good thing, because I think it sounds like we’re singing you songs in your living room. I like that.

CMZ: Do you have plans for a full length in the future or are you waiting to see how you feel that the EP is received?

Vocal Few: I like the idea of releasing EP’s more frequently as opposed to a full length every two years or so. People are more song-oriented as opposed to album-oriented these days, and I think it’s easier for us to record a few songs at a time and keep a steady stream of music coming. I’m not opposed to a full length, but I think we’d need a decent budget to block out the amount of studio time required to sit down and track one.

CMZ: You have talked quite a bit about your relationship on your blog and how honest you are with each other, are the topics for the songs on She’ll Be Right have much to do with your relationship with each other or what else might you be addressing?

Vocal Few: Sure, I think we play into that aspect with the songs. They all seem to have two perspectives represented… mine and hers. They’re easily interpreted because she sings hers and I sing mine. It’s much harder to translate two perspectives, or the two sides of a conversation, with one voice, which is what I have to do sometimes with TCC. It’s been fun to have that obvious back and forth with her on the VF songs.

CMZ: I think it’s pretty cool that there’s a vinyl option for the EP, are you a big fan of vinyl yourself?

Vocal Few: I am a vinyl fan, but I’ve only just purchased a turntable. I grew up listening to 45′s though, and I thought it would be nice to finally release something on wax.

CMZ: Having a newborn baby might make it difficult, but will there be any live performances by Vocal Few?

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer a few questions and congrats on the new baby on the way, my wife is pregnant too so I’m a little behind you on this but I can relate a little bit! :)

Vocal Few: I don’t see why not. We’ll have to see how that plays out though.
