Interview! Nine Lashes

Nine Lashes‘ Jeremy Dunn was kind enough to answer a few questions from Christian Music Zine’s Jared Conaster, take a look at what he had to say about the new album, touring and challenges as band!

CMZ: If you had to describe Nine Lashes in 10 words, how would you do it?

NL: God following, dream chasing, hard working, perservering, down to earth.

CMZ:  I’m always interested in band names where did Nine Lashes come from?

NL: Nine Lashes was derived from the cat of nine tails used to beat Jesus. It’s a reminder of what he went through for us. His wounds were for our benefit.

CMZ:  What does being a part Tooth & Nail mean to you?

NL: Dream come true. I remember playing guitar in my room just imagining being on stage. I never knew it would be singing, though.

CMZ:  What was it like working with such big names like Sprinkle, McNevin, and Clark?

NL: I tried not to be star struck, and I think I fell right below that line, but you just can’t help looking up to the ones you grew up listening to.

CMZ:  Was Valentine’s Day picked as the release date for any particular reason?

NL: There wasn’t any significance in the holiday. It’s just easy to remember. lol

CMZ:  As a band, how do you prepare and manage time between family practice and touring?

NL: This is probably the biggest challenge of our career. Family is really important to me. I never want to miss a moment of my little sister growing up. She’s four, now, and I sadly have to admit that I might miss a thing or two. But she and the rest of my family is definitely a high priority in my life.

CMZ:  What are your thoughts about touring with Red, TFK, and Manafest?

NL:  We are absolutely stoked. Trevor’s taught us alot about having a career in music, and I’m eager to see what I can learn from him about touring.

CMZ:  Becoming a popular band can make you develop a sense of pride. How do you stay humble?

NL:  I don’t think success molds you so much as it just reveals what’s already there. But if I ever need to be reminded of who really got us to where we are, all I have to do is sit down, close my eyes, and retrace our steps. Too many things have happened that I have had absolutely no control over. I could never even begin to take credit.

CMZ:  Your Facebook says that one of your goals is to bring hope to the hopeless. What words do you have for those readers that are struggling with their hope?

NL: There is a purpose for you. Whether you know what it is or not, it’s there, waiting to be revealed. More often than not, my life hasn’t made much sense. But I’ve gotten where I am by taking God’s hand and trusting. All God wants is for you to have a real relationship with Him. Be honest with him. If you don’t understand, tell Him. If you’re hurting, tell Him. If you’re happy, share it with Him. Just be yourself with God. If something needs changing, He’ll change it.

CMZ:  Anything else you’d like to add?

NL: Read the Bible.
