After a solid sophomore record, Paradox is back and this time with DJ Sean P to release Mending. While I am usually hesitant to emcees pairing with DJs, Paradox sidesteps the mistakes and has a DJ that not only knows what he’s doing but doesn’t let him ramble at the beginning and end of every track.
My pet peeve aside, the first surprise is the retro and string-filled Go Outside, which has a chorus that includes a sample of Playdough. While a cameo with P-Doug is greatly missed (despite appearing on Paradox’s Called To Mind) there are great guest artists that practically make the album even more classic. What could be better than an up-and-coming talented rapper alongside MotionPlus, Freddie B., Sivion, Sintax, JustMe, Ruslan, & Manchild? There are some surprises on this album as well including the rapid-fire raps of I Don’t Believe Them and a moving story of a backsliding on Last Time. The second half of the album is icing on the cake because they are instrumentals of nearly every track.
From an ever-improving skill by Paradox, great guest spots, tight production with DJ Sean P, and instrumentals included make this a very strong release that any hip hop fan will love. All I’m waiting for is Paradox to collaborate with the last two emcees of Deepspace 5 he has yet to rap with: Listener & Beat Rabbi. Hopefully that day will soon come.
