When Matt MacDonald of The Classic Crime first announced that he was working on a project with his wife Kristie MacDonald, that instantly piqued my interest as not only was I a big fan of his voice, but having read his blog I thought it would be quite interesting to hear the voice behind the wife that he mentioned so often in his writings.
The duo has now released their debut under the name Vocal Few with the “She’ll Be Right” EP and as much as I thought it might be reflective of The Classic Crime’s Seattle Sessions EP, they really have a distinct sound of their own that will make lovers of singer/songwriters fall head over heels for this Seattle couple.
The EP begins with “We’ll Make It Someday”, an anthem for a couple that are living from day to day the only way that they know how, with a dream that the direction that they’re going will lead them to where they have their eyes set. It doesn’t take but a moment to realize just how great these two sound together with the backdrop of an acoustic guitar and gifted vocals with a tightly knit heart.
“The Fountain” follows up with a beautiful tune that plays like a hymn of psalm that reflects the idea of coming to the fountain of God to drink in the life that only He can provide where you will never thirst again.
If you’re a fan of The Classic Crime, then you’re used to the story telling that often goes along with Matt MacDonald’s voice and “Every Second” follows suit with the thought of wondering if they had lived a worthwhile life and how they would think if they knew they were nearing the end.
She’ll Be Right comes to a close with a whimsically melodic trip down to “Mexico” and it would be a classic finish to an album of any length as the vocals bring us on a roller coaster between soaring blasts from Matt’s voice to Kristie’s soothing backing tones.
I’m kind of mad at myself for waiting until a week and a half after this EP released to give it a listen, but now that I have I’m going to declare that it is going to mighty difficult for an EP to top it this year and I’m saying that realizing it is still just January! Do yourself a favor and give Vocal Few’s debut EP She’ll Be Right a chance, it just might melt your heart.
